My Story


Hi, I'm Melissa and I'm a foodie. I admit it. I'm not a pretentious "have you tried the liquid nitrogen infused kale" kind of foodie. I'm the kind that just simply adores food. I love to cook it, eat it, shop for it, look at it, read about it, tell people about it, and teach about it.

I've been obsessed with food for most of my adult life thanks to some amazing jobs as an Event Planner which allowed me to travel and eat very, very well. About 12 years ago, I was laid off from my job in the tech industry and was taking some time off to be a stay-at-home mom with 3 very active boys who were between the ages of 3 and 8 at the time (pure chaos!). We were living in Amherst, MA while my husband, at the time, traveled constantly. I needed somewhere to go to meet up with other moms and grab a cup of coffee where people wouldn't stare as the boys were, well, being boys. A small market and cafe opened at the end of my road and changed my life! Cushman Market offered food that was fresh, local, innovative, and inviting. The moment I walked in I knew that THIS is what I was supposed to do 'when I grew up'. But then, you know, life sometimes gets in the way and the dreams we have need to be shelved, at least for a little while. I needed time to plan, after all.

I spent the next 12 years immersing myself in anything food-related that I could find. I watched cooking shows, collected cookbooks, amassed a 5-inch ring binder full of recipes, bought all the food magazines, tried new restaurants, and spent all my extra money on new ingredients; I even went to culinary school. All of this in preparation for the day I was able to make my dream a reality.

Flash forward to present day. I'm remarried to my new handsome handy hubby. I live just south of Denver, Colorado. My boys are now bordering on adulthood and I have a house full of kids, cats,  dogs, tools, and dirt...and recently found myself back among the ranks of the unemployed. I also find myself ready to finally take on this adventure that I've been planning for so many years.

Farmgirl Foods was born out of my love for real food and my passion for showing you how easy it is to make and eat amazing stuff. We will be opening soon at Ecclesia Market  in Castle Rock, but in the meantime, feel free to hang out here. I'm so glad you've joined me on this adventure. Let's make something amazing together!
